Only Lovers Left Alive Press Conference

Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they have acquired all North American rights to Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive, which will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival tomorrow in the In Competition section. The film was produced by Jeremy Thomas of Recorded Picture Company and Reinhard Brundig of Pandora Film. Christos Konstantakopoulos of Fairilo House served as executive producer.
Starring Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt, Anton Yelchin and Jeffrey Wright, Only Lovers Left Alive takes place against the romantic desolation of Detroit and Tangier and follows an underground musician, deeply depressed by the direction of human activities, who reunites with his resilient and enigmatic lover. Their love story has already endured several centuries at least, but their debauched idyll is soon disrupted by her wild and uncontrollable younger sister.
Here’s what producer Jeremy Thomas had to say about Sony Pictures Classics acquiring the project.
“It would take a stake through the heart to keep Barker, Bernard and Leiner away from a good movie.”
Thorsten Schumacher, Managing Director of Hanway Films, had this to say in a statement.
“Tangier, Detroit, vampires, guitars – and now Sony Classics – what else is there to say!”
Sony Pictures Classics has this to say about the project in a statement.
“Only Lovers Left Alive is one of the great Jarmusch pictures and American audiences will love it. We are excited to be back with Jim and our great friends Jeremy Thomas and Tilda Swinton, whose performance along with the rest of the cast is fantastic.”
Thorsten Schumacher and Jan Spielhoff for HanWay Films and ICM negotiated the deal.
Only Lovers Left Alive comes to theaters in 2013 and stars Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt, Anton Yelchin, Slimane Dazi, Wayne Brinston, Aurelie Thepaut. The film is directed by Jim Jarmusch.

Tom Hiddleston has revealed his new film Only Lovers Left Alive made him think about what it would be like to live forever.
The Avengers Assemble actor stars opposite Tilda Swinton in indie director Jim Jarmusch’s new film about two vampire lovers who have been alive for centuries.
Tom said: “The vampire thing is really a way of exploring immortality. And the question is, if you were immortal, how might that change your commitment to each other, between two people?
“So really the film is about love in the end, and time and our creative power.”
The War Horse star found the role a very philosophical experience.
He added: “When I was making it, it raised an interesting question for me which is; we have a limited time on this planet and every day we face a choice as to how we use that time, and spend that time most effectively and usefully for ourselves and for the world.
“But if you had an endless stretch of time, how would you use it and what would you choose to become expert at? You could become a concert pianist, you could become a fantastic artist.
“But I found it a really interesting exploration.”

Here is our first look at Tom in Only Lover Left Alive! IndieWire.COm has released this photo Tom and Tilda Swinton as Adam and Eve in the upcoming vampire flick.
Indiewire presents an exclusive look at the first released image from Jim Jarmusch’s crypto-vampire love story “Only Lovers Left Alive,” which stars Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt and Anton Yelchin.
A good bet to make this year’s Cannes Film Festival lineup, “Lovers” stars Hiddleston as Adam, an underground musician who’s deeply depressed by the direction of human activities. He reunites with his centuries-long lover, Eve (Swinton), though their idyll is soon interrupted by Eve’s wild and uncontrollable younger sister Ava (Wasikowska).

Maybe some vampires really can live in the shadows.
Apparently, Tom Hiddleston recently told a reporter he was set to arrive in Detroit this week to begin filming Only Lovers Left Alive, a new movie about two vampires who have been in love for centuries. But there’s just one problem, there doesn’t seem to be any other evidence the movie has actually started shooting.
In the past few days we’ve have dozens of readers contact us demanding to know where exactly the movie is filming in Detroit, only we can’t any proof the movie is even filming yet, let alone where.
Here’s what do know, the film is set in Detroit and Tangiers and will be filmed in Michigan, Western Germany, and Morocco this summer. Tom Hiddleston, Anton Yelchin, Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt, and Tilda Swinton will star in Only Lovers which, according to various industry sources, isn’t’t expected to begin shooting until mid-July.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the movie’s director, Jim Jarmusch, was spotted in Detroit yesterday where he has been “looking at southeast Michigan locations.” They also note that filming will only last “a week or two” in Michigan, and that the film has not yet been approved for the state’s tax incentive.
We contacted Detroit Film hoping to get more information, but they were unfamiliar with the project. We also reached out to the Michigan Film Office and the movie’s production company but our requests for info were not answered.
And, as of now, it doesn’t look like there has been any casting calls or crew calls published online.
So, if the movie is already filming in Michigan as so many of our readers have heard, they are doing a really good job keeping it under wraps. It is more likely Only Lovers will begin filming in a few weeks as was originally reported.
